Bitcoin Drops Below $80,000 Amid Iran Fears
Bitcoin dipped below the $80,000 mark this weekend, following a report from the Wall Street Journal on Saturday.
This downturn stemmed from escalating fears regarding Iran, as the U.S. is reportedly accelerating the evacuation of personnel from military bases and embassies across the Middle East.
In a memo sent Friday to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton stated that "Iran has substantially increased efforts to target U.S. personnel." These evacuations extend beyond earlier notices about diplomatic staff leaving Saudi Arabia.
Currently, BTC hovers around $80,160, representing a 2.4% drop for the week. Ethereum has slipped 3.8% to $2,322, while Solana is down 3.2% to $101, and the wider CMC20 index shows a 2.3% decrease.
Looking at the past month, Bitcoin has seen a 4.8% decline. The major cryptocurrencies surrounding it have averaged a 16.5% drop, which is more than triple that percentage.
However, there are some positive notes: Zcash is up 8% this week, and it is up 135% year-over-year. Monero has also gained 37%. Privacy assets are gaining traction amid global evacuation concerns.
The coming week promises significant market events. The Fed will announce its interest rate decisions Wednesday at FOMC, followed by the ECB on Thursday and the Bank of Japan on Friday.
Additionally, Q3 GDP and September PCE data arrive Thursday, the same day Coinbase and Strategy release their after-hours reports. Perhaps most crucial for onchain activity is the Robinhood earnings call on Tuesday the 27th. Attendees will seek answers on whether Vlad and his team will discuss the tokenized stock pushback, Robinhood Chain, or a potential builders grant program. With U.S. midterms only eight days away, another volatile week is anticipated.
Why it matters
The market is facing volatility driven by geopolitical tensions and major upcoming economic decisions. Readers should watch the FOMC and Robinhood earnings call closely for signals on near-term crypto direction.
