Kraken Opens Bitcoin, Ethereum Options to Eligible European Traders Oct 26

Eligible traders in the European Economic Area can now access Bitcoin and Ethereum options through their established Kraken Pro derivatives accounts, a Kraken announcement made on Oct. 26.

This rollout introduces USD-settled contracts to existing derivatives accounts, featuring shared futures collateral and portfolio margin enabled by default.

The contracts utilize the collateral already backing their futures positions, extending an options introduction that began in July for professional and institutional clients. Previously, European access was anticipated for later in 2026.

These cash-settled contracts calculate premium, profit and loss, and final settlement in U.S. dollars, regardless of the currency used for posting collateral. Maturities span from weekly and monthly contracts up to quarterly and semiannual terms.

Portfolio margin is active by default, allowing offsetting positions to reduce the required support for the portfolio. Both futures and options draw from the same collateral pool, benefiting existing derivatives clients.

Kraken cautions that buyers risk losing their entire options position value, while sellers might incur losses exceeding the posted margin, potentially facing unlimited losses.

Trading operates via a request-for-quote system, allowing clients to build trades with up to five components before reviewing quotes that expire after a short duration.

The European derivatives risk disclosure also alerts users that leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and clients might need to supply extra collateral with little warning.

Why it matters

This expansion into European derivatives markets increases access to complex, leveraged trading instruments for regional investors. Traders should be aware of the risks, as Kraken warns buyers can lose entire positions and sellers face unlimited losses.
