Lightning Labs launches Wavelength for AI Bitcoin payments on mainnet

AI agents can now send and receive payments directly on the Bitcoin mainnet, thanks to Lightning Labs opening Wavelength to everyone on October 23.

This access allows developers to install a client, establish a wallet, and utilize real bitcoin without needing to operate a Lightning node or manage payment channels. Michael Levin noted that agents can pay for things like individual API calls, data feeds, and services supplied by other agents.

The system permits payments to occur without a human needing to approve every transaction, according to the company. This public rollout follows a July announcement where signet and testnet access was available, but mainnet use required an invitation.

Despite the mainnet opening, Levin stated the product remains in alpha. The initial launch featured a wallet interface designed around structured commands and JSON responses, supporting coding agents like Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Copilot, and Gemini CLI.

For agent operation, the toolkit employs Model Context Protocol, or MCP, which exposes wallet functions as callable tools for an AI system. The project’s public repository documents a command to initiate the MCP server, alongside wallet functions for checking balances, sending, receiving, and reviewing activity.

The October release also introduced receive-only credentials that lack the ability to sign transactions, recover funds, or administer the wallet. Furthermore, the public mainnet release enforces a 300,000-satoshi account ceiling and a 50,000-satoshi limit for each virtual transaction output.

In other developments, Coinbase launched Agentic Wallets in February, enabling software to hold funds and trade under defined controls, while Stripe introduced x402 payments on Base in February for charging agents in USDC.

Why it matters

This launch expands Bitcoin's utility by integrating it directly into autonomous AI agent workflows. Readers should watch how this adoption compares to existing agentic wallet solutions from Coinbase and Stripe. The alpha status suggests ongoing development and potential changes to the system.
