Ethereum climbed by 1.79% to $2,350.85, while XRP saw a 2.44% increase reaching $1.33, as the wider cryptocurrency market experienced an uptick, mirroring gains in technology stocks ahead of the Federal Reserve's rate announcement on Wednesday. Solana also gained 1.69%, adding to the market's upward momentum.

The differing strategies employed by spot and derivatives traders in anticipation of the Fed's decision reveal two distinct approaches to the upcoming monetary policy announcement. While futures traders on Binance exhibit a slight inclination toward bearish bets, spot holders are actively withdrawing coins from exchanges.

According to BeInCrypto Markets data, Bitcoin (BTC) appreciated by 1.54% over the preceding 24 hours, reaching a value of $80,837. This rise occurred as technology stocks rallied before the Federal Reserve's rate decision scheduled for Wednesday. Furthermore, major altcoins posted positive returns during the same timeframe; for instance, XRP added 2.44% to reach $1.33, and Solana gained 1.69%. This market movement followed a 1.18% gain in the Nasdaq Composite on Tuesday, a rise spearheaded by chip manufacturers, with Advanced Micro Devices climbing 5%.

The calendar is packed, with the market expecting the Fed to maintain rates at 2 p.m. ET, though BeInCrypto reported that Morgan Stanley anticipates signals pointing toward further increases. Additionally, Alphabet and Microsoft are scheduled to release their earnings after the market closes, and data concerning Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) and GDP will follow on Thursday.

The positioning of spot and futures traders contrasts sharply. Santiment reports that Bitcoin holders moved a net total of 14,942 BTC off exchanges, marking the largest single-day outflow in five weeks. Coins that are held off exchanges cannot be immediately liquidated, which Santiment interprets as a less defensive posture than the broader macroeconomic risks suggest; however, such outflows could also signify exchanges merely relocating assets between their own custodial wallets.

Conversely, futures traders on Binance display a more reserved stance. On Arab Chain, the ratio of long to short positions hovers near 0.95, with short volume approximating $4.11 billion compared to $3.91 billion in longs. Open interest (OI) currently stands at approximately $9.15 billion. An analyst noted, "This means that the volume of short positions slightly exceeds that of long positions, signaling a limited bearish bias in the Bitcoin futures market on Binance."

With exchange supply diminishing and futures participants leaning short, Santiment's identified price levels suggest scenarios where either side's outlook could be proven incorrect. Santiment has designated $80,000 as the initial support level to defend. If this level holds while exchange supply continues to contract, a rally toward the $82,500 to $84,000 range could materialize. Conversely, a significant decline beneath approximately $79,000 would undermine this established structure. Furthermore, a dovish stance from the Fed might compel short sellers to cover their positions, potentially fueling any subsequent upward movement.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, a hawkish Federal Reserve or disappointing earnings from major technology firms could drag both crypto and tech stocks downward in tandem. CryptoQuant has observed that when OI increases during a price decline, it can signal the entry of new short sellers and heightened volatility; however, if OI rises concurrently with the price, this indicates fresh capital flowing into the market.

Why it matters

Traders are showing divergent strategies ahead of the Fed's rate decision on Wednesday. The differing actions between spot holders and futures traders signal varied expectations for the market's immediate direction. Watch for how these contrasting positions react to the Fed's announcement and subsequent economic data.
